The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
