Russian Military Official Dies in the Russian Capital Blast, Authorities Report.
Investigative Image
A senior Russian military figure has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack happened on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.
Investigators indicated that one possible explanation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.
Scene of the Attack
Teams have been sent to the site, which is understood to be in a south district of the metropolis.
Accounts suggest the blast took place in a vehicle lot near a residential building.
Pattern of Incidents
Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of policy.
Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
