Lando Norris Secures Pole Position in Rain-Soaked Vegas Grand Prix as Piastri Falls to Fifth

McLaren's Lando Norris executed a masterful lap in difficult rainy weather on the Las Vegas street circuit, claiming the top spot for the upcoming race and taking a important stride toward his first F1 title.

Title Battle Intensifies as Leader Increases Lead

The championship frontrunner outperformed Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who took P2, while his closest rival—fellow driver Piastri—ended up in fifth position, giving the McLaren driver a prime chance to widen his lead in the championship.

Carlos Sainz claimed P3, with Mercedes' George Russell ending up in fourth place.

Lewis Hamilton Endures Poor Day in Las Vegas

Lewis Hamilton experienced a disappointing session, finishing in 20th place after struggling to make the tires to work in the wet weather during the first qualifying session and getting unlucky with a late yellow flag.

The Ferrari has had issues warming up tyres in wet conditions throughout the year, but Hamilton's teammate performed better, finishing in ninth and recording a time three seconds faster than Hamilton in the first qualifying segment.

"The full-wet tyre was terrible," the driver stated. "I couldn't see anything. I believe I made contact with the barrier somewhere. I just couldn't even see the corners."

Following showing strong pace in the final practice session, he was very disappointing again in what has been a trying debut year with Ferrari.

"Today was amazing," he remarked. "I just didn't get a lap at the end. I felt like we were quickest and then I ended up last. This year is definitely the hardest year."

Lando Norris Delivers When It Counted

For Norris, as he aims to claim his maiden F1 title, he performed flawlessly by not only taking the top spot but also crucially out-qualifying Piastri on a circuit where McLaren had expected to struggle.

He now is ahead of the Piastri by 24 points and Verstappen by 49 points. As things stand, ending up in front of his teammate in the remaining 3 races would be enough to secure the title.

In fact, if he can extend his advantage to 26 points by the end of the upcoming race in Abu Dhabi, it would be sufficient to clinch the championship there.

Impressive Form Continues for McLaren

He is firmly on a roll, discovering his rhythm with the car at a vital juncture in the championship, just as his teammate has struggled.

Norris was thirty-four points behind his teammate after the Dutch GP in the summer, but from that point he has returned consistently top finishes, including pole and wins in the previous two races in Mexico City and Brazil—enough to shift the championship battle in his favour.

The Team Defies Expectations in Vegas

The driver and his team had played down their prospects for the event in Nevada, on a track that is not ideal for their car due to slippery surface and cool temperatures, and the squad had not finished above sixth in the previous two events here.

Yet, they demonstrated outstanding performance in the qualifying session in the rain this occasion.

Difficult Weather Test Drivers

Qualifying opened in steady rain, which made what is inherently a very low-grip track in cool temperatures an absolute handful, marking the first time the session has been held in the wet in Las Vegas and necessitating the use of full-wet rubber.

Indeed, on his initial forays, Norris expressed his concern as he ran off track. "Aqua-planing," he remarked. "It's impossible to stay on course."

Qualifying Unfolds with Excitement

Yet, as the precipitation eased off, the circuit started drying quickly on the ideal path and the laptimes dropped.

Nevertheless, the differences were fine, as Williams' Alex Albon discovered when he was caught by surprise on his last lap in the first segment, striking the wall and sustaining damage that finished his qualifying in sixteenth place.

The rain did stop, but the track was still difficult to handle for the remainder of the session, and with rain tires still being used, the competitors stayed out and continued setting laps as the drying path improved and the laptimes came down.

Last attempts were vital, with Piastri only just advancing to Q2 in tenth place.

Exciting Conclusion to Session

In the final segment, the squads switched to intermediate tyres, once more remaining on track and completing laps, making timing essential for a last attempt showdown.

The lead changed hands repeatedly as the timer wound down, with Norris setting a sighter with his name atop the board before the very last flying laps.

Verstappen then grabbed the top spot as he finished his final attempt, but behind him, Lando Norris was on a charge and, even with a big wobble through corners 14, 15 and 16, had already done sufficient for a impressive pole position with a lap of 1min 47.934secs.

He was untouchable with a caution in his wake as Leclerc went wide and Piastri also had to take evasive action to steer clear of another driver.
