Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
People have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war governance of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."
Research now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

"When the night falls, the fear arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
