Hazlewood received clearance to become part of the Australian team for the first Ashes Test post-injury worries, however, teammate Sean Abbott has been ruled out

Both suffered hamstring issues during their match for NSW against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield this past Wednesday

Tests indicated the 34-year-old Hazlewood did not sustain tissue injury. Abbott, 33, who hasn't played Tests, has a significant hamstring issue

Skipper Pat Cummins is unavailable for the initial match, commencing later this month, therefore missing of a key pace option such as Hazlewood would have been a significant setback

Abbott would have been unlikely to play in Perth, as Hazlewood prepares to team up Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland forming the fast bowling unit

Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury, appears to be scheduled to reappear for the Brisbane match commencing December fourth

Top-order player Smith will lead Australia in Cummins' absence

Like many of the Australia players, the bowler took part in recent matches of state games ahead of the Ashes

Before this week, he had not played domestic first-class games representing NSW for over twelve months

He felt tightness in his posterior chain towards the end of the opposition's batting on Wednesday and left the field for safety reasons

Neither Hazlewood nor Abbott batted in the follow-on innings during their defeat by 300 runs

"We have one week before the international cricket - we consistently choose being cautious," commented Cummins

"The medical staff sought to identify the exact situation ahead of risking and potentially making the injury more severe"

"He seldom shows him upbeat, therefore it was positive to witness his smile"

"He knows his body really well. It seemed he felt a little bit worried (and desired it checked out"

The bowler collected 57 international selections with the national team in white-ball cricket
