British Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Destinations
The UK authorities has included an additional eleven more nations to its travel advisory list concerning the threats of methanol toxicity from tainted spirits.
The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to several high-profile incidents such as the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance often utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for human consumption.
While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.
Government Recommendations for Travellers
Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.
"When you are having drinks abroad, choose reputable establishments and refrain from local brews or free shots," the minister said.
"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's much more severe than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."
